What Dead Birds Tell Us About a Warming World

Seabirds are frequently cited as marine ecosystem indicator species. Since 2014, the North Pacific has experienced multiple seabird mass mortality events (MMEs) collectively encompassing several million birds. During this same period of time several types of warming have occurred, including the northeast Pacific marine heatwave, an El Niño event, and the intensification of arctic/sub-arctic warming in the Bering and southern Chukchi Sea.

For countless generations Native Americans and First Peoples have stewarded the rich and diverse ecosystems throughout this region which range from as deep as a Halibut can dive to as high as a Mountain Goat can climb. Join ethnobotanist T. Abe Lloyd as he explores the resiliency of Indigenous food systems by using an ecological lens to compare and contrast traditional and industrial food systems. He’ll close by reflecting on how social paradigms guide food systems.
